Snake Oil

I have used Marvel Mystery Oil since my teen years, running a Mercury flat head V-8. I was advised by a BMW factory trained mechanic to use Techron Fuel System Cleaner occasionally in my R1200GS. So I have concocted a cocktail that I now use with very good results and I thought I would put it out there. I actually hope someone else tries it and either confirms or disputes my results. I put 100cc of Techron Fuel System Cleaner plus 50cc of Marvel Mystery Oil in a little measuring cup and add it to my fuel tank as I am leaving the house on the way to fill up. That exact process give you a short trip with a higher concentration of snake oil in the tank, then when you fill up, it's good for the rest of the journey. Now the wild claims. I actually feel a noticeable difference in how it runs, smoother and more tractable. If I slow to go around a tight turn and pull away from it at 2000rpm, it pulls smoothly and willingly. Going down the highway, the bike just feels like a brand new one, perfectly smooth and refined. I add this concoction about every fourth fill up. As a side note, I use this concoction in a Jaguar V-12, and the results are much the same.

All these fuel elixirs are unilaterally great at one thing, lightening your wallet! What if anything they actually do is subjective.

If you feel they work or make improvements then keep using them. Me I’ll save the money and use it towards other useless things like pull tickets at the VFW.

I occasionally use a bottle of techron the tank before my oil change. Never had any problems except the gas eventually disappeared and I had to refill my tank. :ROFLMAO:

I like Marvel Mystery Oil, I’ve seen measurable fuel economy gains. Typically I’m a skeptic but for where it is priced seems to deliver.

I use techron once or twice a year and I can notice a slight difference in how smooth the engine runs after adding a bottle. Might just be my imagination but at 8 bucks a bottle it's not causing me to go bankrupt and I don't believe it's hurting anything so I'll keep using it.

I just use Top Tier gas and have had no issues.
I was at the BMW shop and they have their fuel elixir that was on sale for something like $10 a bottle and suggested that you use it every tank. Cannot imagine what this does other than just about double the cost per tank of fuel.

As for in reased fuel mileage I'm also skeptical. There are only so many BTU's in a gallon of gasoline. Unless these elixirs increase the amount of BTU its is almost impossible to increase the fuel mileage. I will say that if you had a clogged/partially clogged injector and this potion somehow managed to dislodge the debris and the spray pattern improved the illusion of increased fuel mileage may manifest itself. But the reality is it did not increase the fuel mileage it just got the fuel mileage back to where it should be.

The good news is most of these potions, elixirs, sake oils do not actual harm as they are used at such low concentrations that they are so dilute they simply pass through the fuel system and out the exhaust like nothing ever happened because nothing ever happened. If you feel they work for you or there is a benefit I suggest you continue to use them. As anytime these threads come up I also encourage you to look up the MSDS/SDS of the product you are using to see typically what very common chemicals you are paying inordinate amounts of money for. Most of the time it is things like Naphtha, kerosene and/or alcohol in a fancy bottle with some clever words on it to make you think great things are going to happen.

Heading out to the garage to drape a magic amulet I got from a shamen at the local gas station. You know the guy that barely speaks english, smells like patchouli and curry that stands behind the big glass case filled with crystals, drug I mean tobacco paraphernalia case and libado products. He said it would clean my injectors by the use of positive energy and the gas would flow more easily because the bike was at peace with the universe.

The BMW fuel injector cleaner bottle looks just like Techron car / truck injector cleaner bottle.

I had some intermittent driving issues after i bought my 2014 GSA used. It would periodically (one time every couple rides) lean backfire from the intake after the bike was warm. I adjusted the valves with no difference. I paid $220 to have the dealership verify the cam timing was correct. They suggested the fuel injector cleaner for my issue. I was surprized my problem fully went away, after the injector cleaner. I run Techron in all of my cars when Autozone has the 2for1 special. As expensive as gas is now, every little bit of MPG helps.
I have thought long and hard about just what does snake oil do to improve anything? I believe that it lubricates and cleans everything it touches, fuel pump, injectors, valve stems, combustion chamber and piston top. But the main improvement that one can sense is the effect it has on the injectors. I think that the injector needles follow the electric impulses more exactly, with no sticking or hesitation, giving you an engine that runs as it was supposed to. It makes me wonder if replacing injectors at certain mileage intervals is a good idea. I can only imagine how many events an injector goes through in 60,000 miles.
I ride for almost 40 years and owned a zillion of bikes. I have never used any additive to a fuel.
Am I wrong?

There are two camps: believer and non-believers. Neither is wrong and the only difference is one group more money in their wallet.

If you want to see immediate results; try to light each of those additives on fire. That is the telltale sign that it will help or hinder. If the combustion within the firing chamber won't ignite the additive it will only coat or gum up the works if it's left behind. Yes, the fuel is to be mixed within a certain concentration to help assist in burning it off for obvious reasons...but, I had a guy bring me a Corolla with valve problems, he said he was using Lucas fuel system cleaner according to the directions a couple of times a year to clean and so on but it got worse. I tore into the engine and found every intake valve was coated with caked-on garbage, the exhaust valves a little less. I showed him by pouring the straight undiluted Lucas cleaner into a metal cup, holding a torch to it and it never caught on fire Then again with gasoline mixed in...still wouldn't stay ignited if more than a second or two. if it's an oil additive that's a different story as it's not meant to be ignited, but be careful with fuel system cleaners.

In the land down under in 1986 a well known personality & champion production car racer extolled the virtues of an "Energy Polarizer"... It was a small epoxy resin box of magnets and crystals screwed into the car body, which claimed to enhance the car's performance by "aligning molecules". Yep! It worked a treat!!!....... For his bank balance........ For a while & at A$697 it still sucked in the eager punters!!! 😁..... At your wallets peril... 😖😢😭...

I know the GS is designed to travel to far corners of the earth where gas stations are Sparkletts bottles filled with gas and still run, here we could digress to Premium vs Regular requirements. But if you have a Costco near you or a Chevron then simply using reliable Top Tier rated fuel will have all the additives any engine should need. I also know we do things which feel good vs are logical so if you want to mix two tried and true elixirs and run those, well you do you!

Remind me of the tornado vortex intake. It concentrated the air by spinning it into a tornado thus increasing fuel economy and power.

Gotta wonder why manufactures just don't install these stuff from the factory??

YEP!!! Got suckered by one of those little critters many years ago... Had a Ford F100 4x4 that loved to drain the gas tank!!! The only vortex it created was in my brain when I realized it was a dud... o_O

I too bought one. Fortunately it had a money back guarantee. FIL and I both got our money back.

This was one of the snake oil awakenings. Slick50 was another.

now I’m older wiser and a much bigger skeptic.

Amen to that... (y)(y)(y).........
Not pointing any fingers here, but it always amazes me how much money people are willing to spend on chemicals and gadgets but won't spend a minute or a dollar to attempt to verify that said item works as claimed.
