The speedo sensor runs on off the rear wheel. Either damaged sensor, wrong sensor or miss matched rear drive

If memory serves you recently bougth this bike and it was throwing lots of faults and codes?? Do you know the history or any part of the history of the bike?

If by tested you mean with something like a multimeter, no it cannot be tested. To test it you'd need to use something like a GS911 to be able to see the sensor on your computer.

I would suspect wiring to that ABS/speedo sensor in the final drive. Do you have any codes? What happens if you drive with the rear ABS/speedo sensor disconnected? A wiring issue may give a faulty (and high) speed reading.

An old thread that may help give some clues:

hello thanks for reply , ive checked the codes on motoscan and its all clear , a strange thing though if a unplug the abs module the speedo will stop but the rear brake light still works? ive been reading the forums and it says that an unplugged module will give speedo and brake failure? I only have no speedo?

Brake light should be fine, ABS would not works when disconnected.

I would chase the wiring further up on the harness, or get another sensor, or check final drive for a whole bunch of metallics messing up the sensor. Last time the oil was changed?

It is something in that sensor circuit or how that sensor is reading.

hello , thanks for that , I have replaced the speedo sensor , the old one was dirty and cleaned still no good so I replaced it, will replace the gear oil as don't know when it was last done , I did wonder if there is another source of signal say alternator making another possible interference ?? don't know, thank you

This is normal as the speedo and brake lights are run from the ECU on the ABS pump. This si why I suggest when bypassing the servo brakes you simply abandon the ABS pump in place instead of separating the ECU from the ABS pump so you can unplug the wiring. Letting the old pump in place also means you do not have to cap and seal the back of the ECU and fashion a mount for it.

If you just remove the brake lines going to a from the pump and suck out as much of the old brake fluid as possible in stall the f/r jumpers there is no threat of messing up the wiring or board inside the "brain" and the conversion time is reduced by 75%.

Wonder if you damaged some of the wiring or connectors inside the pump when you unplugged the two ribbons?

The alternator should have no effect on the speedo/ODO
