I have posted the a/m link on the GS-forum I frequently visit and where several 1250-owners reside: NOBODY hears anything out of the ordinary... which convinces me even more that the majority of GS-riders are not very discriminating as to the noises their bike produces...

I wish my hearing weren’t that finely tuned...<img src="http://www.r1200gs.info/forum/images/R1200GS_info_2015/smilies/tango_face_sad.png" border="0" alt="" title="Frown" class="inlineimg" />
You and me too. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that these noise issues may never be openly resolved. Some GS’s have ‘em, some don’t. Some riders hear ‘em, some don’t. Even between the guys at my dealership range from not bothered by the noise to bothersome. Speaking of which, dealership topped my oil to the top of the window to stop the constant oil alerts, even though it was at just over the half way mark. Sensitive beast it would seem.

I think the sound is related to how much the bike weighs with the passengers
When I'm with my wife I hear more when I'm alone but I'm 140 kg I hear it less.

No wonder if he is driven by a gentle person who does not hear much noise, he may not notice it at all

Subject: Strange R1250GS engine noise

Hello!
My name is Ivan Angov and I am from Bulgaria.
A week ago I bought a new BMW R 1250 GS Adventure motor.
Unfortunately, at low acceleration at low rpm, a very annoying engine
noise is heard.
It occurs when the engine is under load at all speeds and all gears. A
typical circumstance - 50 mph in top gear when slightly opening the
throttle there is a strange rattle/slight knock/grumble.
It turned out that there is a lot written on the Internet about this topic.
Unfortunately no solution has been found yet!?
People sell their machines and others don't want to buy because of this
problem!
This is my first BWM bike and I'm pretty disappointed right now!
Will there be any hope of resolving this in the near future?
This turns out to be a significant problem! And I think you should fix
it. Otherwise, you lose a lot!

You can see this topic, it describes in some detail the problem and the
negative reaction of people.
And I assure you, it's not just this forum!

I expect your reply!

Best Regards,

Ivan Angov

Why not send the same letter to BMW's headquarters in Germany? They will most likely tell you to contact BMW Bulgaria, who will tell you to contact your dealer who will probably tell you to contact BMW Bulgaria!!!

Hi everybody, I live in Italy and recently purchased a 2019 GS Adventure 1250.

Immediately I've noticed the riding noises described in this thread, coming from the front wheel and also from the rear. Moreover, I've noticed that the engine noise level is really high when cruising on the motorway, coming both from the exhaust muffler and from the air-induction.

For the first type of noise (the one from the wheels) I've changed the tyres to new Pirelli's and this was reducing the noise level by 20/30%, and now I can say it's still loud but acceptable.
For the noise at high-speed coming from exhaust and induction I have no solution at the moment.

Honestly I'm really disappointed because I've purchased a very expensive bike which is expected to be super-comfortable, but with all these noises it's absolutely NOT comfortable and unpleasant to ride.

Dealer says it's normal and I'm the only one complaining, but reading this forum seems that I'm not the only one...

2020 r1250gsa

I just started following this thread ..... after I picked up my new 2020 R1250.

The first thing I noticed out of the showroom was the loud engine. When I took it back to the service department and questioned the noise he started the bike, revved it up then said ...... "that sounds perfect". I will try the throttle body adjustment later and let you know if that does anything.

The issue looks like its going to be in the 2020 models as well.

At the moment I am in France and riding my very noisy 2019 R1250GS for the last few times before it's transported back by truck to my BMW dealer in Belgium next week.
There its accessories (LEDs, alarm, crash bars etc.) will be transferred to my new 2020 R1250GS, which I will take in possession afterwards.
This gives me the opportunity to compare the strange noises both identical bikes make : the noise my new 2020 GS makes is about 10 times quieter than that of the 2019 GS.
When I shut my helmets vizor the noise is gone on the new one , but it barely lessens on the 2019 bike.
So I think that some GSes are louder than others and maybe the 2020 version has gotten some internal changes that BMW certainly won't reveal to us...

I didn't realise the level of noise some R1250 owners are experiencing. When you say your old bike is 10 times louder than your new bike how could BMW refuse to sort it? It must have sounded like a road drilling machine!!! BMW MUST know about this issue and what's causing it.

They know...they know , but they have classified it as being "normal"...

And let's say that my new GS is 5 times quieter than the "old" one... hard to quantify it scientifically...

popping sound

2020 R1250GSA

I went back to the dealer yesterday to pick up my new panniers. While I was there I asked the service department about the popping sound I hear when I open the throttle. He gladly took it for a test ride. When he returned, once again. he said everything was normal. I think you guys are correct. They are hearing all these issues but until something "happens" I don't they are going to admit anything.

Ok, it louder than my previous R1200. It pops when I hit the throttle but I still have a smile on my face when I ride the bike. :)

I found a you tube video with what sounds to me the symptoms the OP and some others are describing- unfortunately Im new to the forum and will not allow me to include the URL- (I think after 5 posts I'm able to)
I'm also new to the brand and started with a K16 B Ive dumped this bike since I received a recall notice for the tranny with no fix in sight
opting for the new GS and found this thread- if this is common practice on how BMW treats their customers by saying everything is normal-till something blows up.. Then I'll go back to the japs...

This thread is dependent on me ordering the 2020
already dealt with a tranny recall from BMW with no fix yet and a possibility of a rear wheel lock up- there is no way I' dumping more money into another problem.... Thank you BMW for giving me great first impressions on you ultimate driving machines

The problem is : I blame BMW for a lot of issues with their GS-es, which they blatantly refuse to address, all while treating their customers like toddlers... BUT (and it is a big BUT), the R1250GS is such an accomplished bike to ride... with my mind I know that my KAWASAKI VERSYS 1000 is the less troubled bike and the more reliable one, but is doesn't ride like a GS... and there we are.... jeeeezzz....>:)

Wow! What a noise! There is something seriously wrong with that engine. My R1250GS sounds like a sewing machine in comparison.

The strange engine noise I refer to is only apparent on the move when the engine is under slight load.

It's indeed NOT "our" strange noise but nevertheless an alarming one... do bring it (on a trailer) to your dealer at once !!!

Hi Guys...jumping onto this thread without having read the entire thing...sorry

My '19 R1250GSA pings a lot. This pinging can best be described as "the engine gargling marbles".
It pings in any gear at any air temperature, at any engine temperature, and at any altitude. The worst pinging is between 2000 and 4000 rpm when gently accelerating. Above 4000 rpm it may well be still pinging, but if so the other engine and road noises drown it out.
This pinging is continuous and is definitely not normal. My chrome exhaust header is very discolored from the heat, with a lot of deep blues in it, which also is not normal.

Does anyone else have a bike which exhibits the same symptoms?
