My '08 1200GS has SW Motech bars and head protectors in place.
They protected the engine in a spill that was hard enough to rip the LH pillion foot peg off the rear frame. The SW Motech bars only had paint scratches. :)

The BMW bars will still allow the valve covers to contact the ground. You still need the covers which are not necessary with aftermarket bars.
I tested them (leaning the bike) and the covers are NOT touching the ground. Not even close. Also they seem to be of very good quality. And they looks good :)

Is there any chance that heat from the engine could expand, bend, or deform sw motech crash bars in a way that could prevent them to fit properly again when reinstalled after being removed?

SW Motech

Big fan of all things SW Motech. I have used them on one BMW GS and one Triumph Bonneville and I used the OEM Bars on my recent BMW RS. They have to be removed on the RS for service so I won't be putting them on my GS this time around as I don't need another 40 bucks tacked onto my service bill and besides that I find them kinda ugly especially on the blacked out new engines.

That said, I'm thinking of using the Xmoto valve cover protectors and leave it at that. Did that on my RT and lopsided once and just had to replace the protector and no oil was lost from the low side . The bike slid down a paved road a good distance. Now bear in mind I do not plan to do any off road with my GS I"m not buying it for that purpose. I tour only and find no problem doing the odd forest road to access a campsite but no gnarly stuff for me at my age.

OK now as forbears. I like the Motech both design and price point, but if money is no object he ADV bars deserve a look. I'm told a lot of the touring rentals buy them for their durability and protection . They seem needlessly fatter though but very well designed and do not rely as much on engine casing mounts.

Hope that helps

SW-MOTECH uses 2.2mm thick (not thin) mild steel tubing. The purpose of this thickness and this material in the design of the SW-MOTECH bars is to help absorb the crash and not transfer it to the frame.
got these, some needed force to get the holes aligned, I used a jack
