All that said...if I owned the R&D budget I'd pour nearly all into the 850 and 750 GSes. I think Triumph, KTM and Yamaha have great bikes in that segment and BMW is far behind. BMW missing an opportunity. And those buyers as they age will potentially move to the 1200+cc bikes for touring as they age.
<snip>
And as they (well, OK, I) continue to age, moving down to a nice 800-ish size touring bike becomes more attractive. I ride an R1250 GSA (low), but I'm not convinced I'll be able to do so for long: 70 is only a couple of years away now. Sure, some folks still ride GS boxers on long tours or single-track into their 80's but they're outliers.

The next GS should be hybrid with combined 230 HP and a 0-60 in about 2.5 sec. Heated glove compartment and a self greasing final drive. It should also come with unlimited access to Starbucks, double clutch, and self driving mode called auto pilot. And the screen should be 12" with Spotify, Disney+, and Youtube. And of cause: A camera to automatic upload of selfies to Instagram.

And two extra wheels for improved stability.

Personally, I don't mind the seat height (and I have a 29" inseam) as long as there is good suspension travel and good ground clearance.

Less weight would be top of list for me. Even at the expense of some of the horsepower and electronics.

I missed my opportunity at buying the HP2 Enduro when it first came out. No electronics, conventional forks and most importantly: more than 50 lbs shaved off the stock R1200GS.

If they ever came out with the R1250GS HP2 Enduro, I'd be all over that in a heartbeat.

I would like the to come out with a Sport Tourer edition for us that use the GS/GSA as a touring machine. Something that has a less “aggressive or utilitarian” look. I truly love my GSA and is my 4th BMW. I’m 6’5” tall and traded my RT in for a GSA for comfort reasons. I know, if I want something like that, I should look at the Versys, but I’m a fan boy also.
Have you thought about looking at a R1250RS? I've been thinking that might be my next sport touring bike. They're not making one right now in the motorsports color scheme but when they do I might have to go shopping.

Not cool, now you have me going down that rabbit hole!

So the R1250GS/GSA is now in its third year and considering the competition from KTM and Ducati with their latest Adventure offerings, what do you think BMW will do to change/improve the next generation GS/GSA?

IMHO, I think they will just follow what they have been doing since the R1100GS, i.e. raising the engine size to 1300cc with ShiftCam technology and adding the 10.25" screen and ACC we now see on the RT bikes. Since the R1100GS, BMW has raised the engine displacement by 50cc with each generation after it; R1100, 1150, 1200 and 1250 so why not 1300.

Thoughts anyone?

TIA,
Rob
All the goodies mentioned would be great, but I would re-emphasize larger gas tank. Not the nearly 9 gallon one on the GSA, just something like 6 gallons to get up to and maybe a bit over 300 mile range. Forget about the curvy angled side luggage racks, just straight vertical ones that will work with numerous luggage types. Put an approprite skid plate on to start with, not some flimsy 1/4 coverage thingy of the past and while they are at it how about some proper wide footpegs that everyone would like.

Brembo brakes to address the recall issues? :p

LiOn Battery
Larger TFT from the R1250RT
Larger displacement
Squatting when stopped like the HD pan-america
Something closer to the EZcan for connecting in accessories

Otherwise Honda's Africa Twin looks good, or a Harley, or an Indian, …

Lose some weight! I still have my 2014 GS with 90K miles and runs perfect, but just so damn heavy at 69! So I bought a 2021 KTM Adventure R! Lots lighter, lots faster, handles great, 5 1/2 gallon tank for 200 miles plus, Cruise control, quick shifter and cost less ;) I gave up self canceling turn signals :)!

I think the larger TFT screen is a done deal, as dealers are discounting the NAV6.
I expect to see the new model shown October with ACC as an option and maybe electric screen.
I personally think we won’t see a 1300 until 2025.
And, if we are really lucky we will get some better colours.

We will likely see an updated K series (GT/GTL) before we see a reinvented R-GS.
I doubt that. They've discontinued the K1600 platform altogether - too expensive to modify it for Euro5 compliance, and sales volume doesn't support a clean-sheet design in that segment. Besides they just poured big bucks into launching the R1800.

History suggests it won't be long before there's a major overhaul of the R-series. The R1100 lasted 7 years, with a mid-cycle refresh to add 50cc. They got 8 years out of the oilhead 1200 with a mid-cycle refresh to put overhead cams in it. The wethead is now 8 years old and its mid-cycle refresh got the shiftcam and 50cc.

What they'll come up with - who knows? I've had enough of graphical TFT dashes and connectivity out the wazoo, though. Analog gages and no bluetooth please.

Instead of making it bigger and heavier and more complex and costly...how about they just figure out a way to knock 50 lbs. off the thing?
An 850GS is about 40 lbs lighter and now has just about all the goodies you find on its bigger brother. I know of a few people that have downsized and pretty happy with their 850GS.

Do you guys remember the HP2 Enduro? It would be fun to see BMW bring something like that back to market but I wouldn't expect it to sell many with all the great mid-weight ADV bike options out there that already weigh less than 500 lbs.

Recently test rode the new 850GS and while I can say it wasn't a bad mid-cap bike, the 1250GS felt almost as light and was slightly shorter which worked for me. I also learned that the motor is made in China on the 850, and I wasn't too thrilled about that. If I wanted a mid-sized ADV bike, to me the Tiger 900 or the KTM 890 series are still better.

Time to go on a diet. Everybody was wowed when the R1200GS was 70 lb. less than the R1150GS it replaced. It's crept up again and now the current GS weighs as much (just over 500 lb dry) as the 1150 did 20 years ago.
