Looking to upgrade some electrical options and wanted to use a switched power supply to power up a USB port on my 05' GS , found this port right behind the seat and looks like I may not have the mated adaptor to use this connection ? Only have a Haynes manual and could not find out much about this 4 pin connector, measured voltage from 1 pin that was neg to others showed 10v on one and 12V to other 2 when key turned on ? All 3 points increased to +2v when bike running....can anyone point me to the correct schematic or explain ?

That is where a diagnostic toll like a GS-911 is plugged into. Do not use it to power accessories.

Buy a power distribution block like a FZ! Fuseblock. It powers off the battery then you run a trigger wire to a keyed power source like the city light. Use a Posi-Tap to tie into the trigger wire. The FZ! has 6 fused placed where you can then easily tie in accessories easily and separate from the bikes wiring. it also has a 30a integral relay for added protection.

The FZI also has the added benefit if you use a trigger wire depending on how you situate the fuses to the accessory will be either keyed power or power all the time,.

There is a GPS power supply plug at the front right of the steering head or you could also disconnect the Powerlet wiring to the Powerlet plug on the left side just below the seat. The black plastic spring loaded cap.

My preference is any accessory is not tied to the bikes wiring. If and accessory goes Chernobyl and grounds out I don't want it taking the bikes wiring with it.

Thanks Perazz, I like the sound of the FZ block, may use the powerlet for now on a USB port for phone charging (if I locate it) and assuming its on a switched leg of the wiring already.... What would be the benefit of having a non-switched accessory ? Would think it would be best to have most things switched or you'd end up leaving something on and drain the battery down (like I probably would) ?

The part number for the GPS adapter is 83300413585, yellow cables and white plug. It only costs $15 from your BMW dealer. The middle cable is not used (it has speed information or something like that). You can put up to 5A on this cable, it’s protected from shorts by the canbus. I use it for my GPS, phone charger and auxiliary lights relay trigger. The power stays on for a few minutes which is nice as your aux lights will stay lit in a dark garage, and the GPS won’t want to power down at every short stop. And no risk of ever forgetting to switch anything off. You can see what it looks like here: 12V Adapter Stecker Kabel Navi Zusatzgerät BMW R 1200 GS HP2 adaptor 83300413585 | eBay

So this GPS adapter is up front just not being used(empty socket)and to tie into it neatly this linked adaptor above is my best bet ?

Non-switched is great for things that you'd not want the bike on but have access to power items like air compressors or be able to add charge back in like a SAE battery tender whip. If circuit is switched no power can go in or out unless the key is turned on.

Okay, so I can't seem to find the GPS plug in the harness up front, must be hidden under the cloth tape pretty well....will take things apart at a later date but what's the difference or pros/cons of just using the powerlet port under the seat, I'm assuming this is switched off the ingnition and canbus as well, more amperage capacity ?

May look into adapters from powerlet.com to see options or may just eliminate it completely and just grab the +/- off the plug itself ....

I appreciate all the help and knowledge from you guys, I'll get the hang of things as time goes on...Love this bike 👍

The plug under the seat (on my 2009, but I think it's the same for the newest models) have a max load of 5A (no fuse, it's controlled by the ZFE, shuts off when overloaded, remove the load, turn bike off then restart).

It turns ON when ignition is turned ON and turn OFF five minutes after shutting off the iginition.

Looks like I'm going this route for now...came across a couple of these cables from the previous owner

and looks like I'll make a custom harness out of the cut one and solder and shrink wrap what I need to power a USB up front for a phone and whatever, maybe even have a tail soldered off the positive side for under the seat to use as a trigger wire for a separate accessory fuse block for future add-ons 👍 this way I'll still have the longer adapter wire with the cigarette lighter available for other possible situations that may come up and maintain the stock OEM powerlet port..
I powered up the powerlet via the key on my 05' bike and the voltage went back to 0-volts after roughly 1.5-2 minutes after turning off the ignition 👍

Got a little bored at work and came up with this for now 👍 I'll have 2 spots to hook up separate loads off of the powerlet and 1 trigger terminal if/when needed 👍 going to mount it it the tray somehow once I verify clearance with the seat on and all 👍... all done with just a few spare parts laying around....

Well, looks like my little project is done (for now). All I needed for now till I maybe add some Aux lights and would really like a front/rear dash cam permanently mounted (Like a K3 set up or ?) Then I'll use the triggered connection for a fuse box👍, for right now the switched USB for my phone/headset and maybe GPS will be good to go.....

RoadKing - great gouge, I appreciate the info and my apologies for taking so long to respond. It makes great sense to separate the power grids of the bike and misc. So I'd be running the Garmin XT2 hot wire directly to the battery yes?
