Hello all, I have a new to me r1250gs that came from the dealer with no o-ring on the oil fill plug, which allowed leaking onto my right boot. Since the dealer I bought from was way to far to drive to I figured I would just go to my local dealer and get a new o-ring.

I am now confused. is the o-ring supposed to stay in the valve cover under the cap, or did the dealer get me the wrong o-ring?

I would think it would go on the cap under the flange.
Does the o-ring mate on surface 1 (would stay connected to plug when removed) or surface 2 (which would stay in valve cover when plug is removed, and to me seems like a much higher likely hood to loose it in the engine.)

the oring I received is 27mm inside and 3mm thick. It fits in the valve cover at mating surface 2.

If its the number 2 position, I am hoping the dealer in Iowa (which supposedly did all labor) did not loose it in the engine.

On Hexheads the o-ring is under the cap as in it stays in the valve cover when the plug is removed. If this were a new to me GS from a dealership, I'd be taking it back to the dealership so that they could clean the bike up and replace the 0-ring

I hope not Van Wall? I wish their service dept reputation was better.

My 07 hex head it is position 2 and as P14 says stays in valve cover when you remove the cap. If it was my bike I'd pull the valve cover and take a look for peace of mind. Easy to do.

This exactly. They can also get me a new pair of boots if the right one is ruined because of the oil leak. BS on the dealer. This should have been covered in a PDI.

Confirming the O-ring (2) is seated into the valve cover at the bottom of the threaded bore for the plastic fill plug. You're correct, this is a very fat O-ring.....3mm looks about right.

The Drain plug has no O-ring whatsoever. It looks like it does in my photo......but rest assured it's just the angle the picture was taken at.

These photos were just taken of my 2020 R1250GSA.

Yes it was Van Wall and I live near Milwaukee Wisconsin so going back is not worth the trip.

As far as the boots, it is not an issue. They are the Sidi Adventure 2 boots and a couple oil spots is just more character [emoji846]

My bike has the touratech case guards on it so not "super" easy, but not a project either.

I have about 500 miles on the bike since I bought it.. I added a make shift oring out of rubber gasket material at position 1 about 100 miles after I picked it up. It worked fine up until me getting the right one put in yesterday. I am pretty sure if the oring was in the engine the timing chain and cams made short work of it already.

I will call them and let them know about this issue. It's pretty shitty to have to deal with this on a 2020 with 8k on the clock

There is an unlikely chance the oring did come out with the cap or they removed it, then forgot to put it back in. If it was me I'd pull the valve cover to be sure, any bits and pieces would give you proof.

Definitely worth letting them know. I often get parts there but locals seem to head to Iowa City, Omaha or Iowa City for service which is unfortunate.

Thanks Dan, that is exactly how mine looks now.

I let them know and I will have my local dealer add it to the service notes. I will also ask them what they think. I am sure if the oring made it into the engine it would be chewed to bits by the top end and end up in the oil pan where hopefully it would not make it past the pickup screen.

I just want it noted incase of a warranty issue and a denial due to "foreign object damage" or something along those lines.

I appreciate all the help and insight.
