Hi,

I'm new to my RS1200 GS and to the BMW Motorrad Navigator VI, both purchased used, and this is my first post here.

I'm trying to find a way to send a location from Google Maps on my Android phone to my Navigator VI and failing at it.

Do any of you have an approach that works?

My Failed Attempt: Garmin Smartphone Link App

It looks to me like the only app that supports the Navigator VI is Garmin Smartphone Link App. When I install it and go to Google Maps, Smartphone Link now shows up as a destination. Picking that destination opens Smartphone Link which says:

"Not Supported" "Unfortunately, the app cannot handle the object you want to share"

And then I can pick a location on the Smartphone Link App instead which is much worse experience than Google Maps - not what I want. Apparently, this used to work (I can't put links in my first post).

What does work "most of the time" is to click on the address in Google Maps, which puts the address (or coordinates) on the clipboard, and then paste that into the "Find Nearby Places" in Garmin Smartphone Link App. But I'm hoping for a better approach.

Alternatives?

If there are is no way to do this with the Navigator VI, are there any better navigation devices, that fit into the holder on my RS1200 GS and integrate with the dial thingy on the left handlebar and where the app experience is superior?

Thank you,

Peter

Thank you @TSConver, I tried this. And I don't seem to be able to get it to work:

I tried inputting a destination and got this error:

"FATAL ERROR
The map link is invalid, it refers to a single place and not directions between two or more places. Please attempt to copy the link again."

So I tried with a route and got this error:

"FATAL ERROR:
Not valid Goodgle maps directions data
Please go back and check your Maps link and retry, if this error persists then please check again in a few hours"

I guess I'll try again in a few hours, but this is not encouraging. And it requires me to cut'n'paste between the maps app and an external website with presumably in the end will produce some output. How do i get that output onto the Navigator VI once I have it?

That wont work because you're not sending a route or track but a single waypoint. A route or track must have at least 2 points, a start and a finish. That's what the error message is telling you.
If you want to use google, use Google MyMaps. You can import a route from Google MyMaps (not Maps) by converting it to KML in MyMaps, (export as a KML file) and then importing the kml file into Basecamp.

You can however create a waypoint in Basecamp by using coordinates. In Google Maps, select the coordinates and copy them with a right click.
Then in Basecamp, select the find coordinate tool (Ctrl T) and paste the coordinate. Select the create Waypoint button to create your new waypoint.

Hope this helps.

Using an Android phone or tablet doesn't give you many options to be able to transfer to your Nav VI. You need to create a gpx file. I believe apps like MyRoute can do that. The transfer to the Nav VI has to be by USB. I have not found a way to get my Samsung phone to connect to a Nav VI. I could only do it with a Samsung Tablet. My understanding is that the proper drivers are missing.
I have moved to a Garmin zumo Xt. I use the Garmin Drive app to send the gpx file by Bluetooth to the zumo XT. With a 3DAM adaptor, it fits into the OEM GPS mount. It works fine but I did lose the integration with the wonderwheel.

Hello Peter

I am in same boat with you, I enjoyed looking up an address or location on Google map and then send or share To BMW's NAV via Smartphone Link and this is very helpful while you are on the road and did not create any GPX or the point is not on GPX file.

From what i understand, Garmin stopped the support for the app when Garmin switched over Zumo XT, that is terrible but all we can is ask and i doubt it will get fix

Hello Peter
I enjoyed the feature till it stops working, contacted Garmin and explained the issue, the response from Garmin was, the issue is not or caused by the software/app but it caused by new and latest phone operating system, so we have to enter the address manually into the NAV VI
