@SavageDuck Hi! It's a bit of an old thread but it doesn't cost asking: did you note by any chance which wire you fixed the earth? And how did you fix the earth? Did you add a new ground or where was the bad ground (or partial ground if it was not supposed to?) Thanks!
 
Another update. So, what I did before was add a new earth connector from the switch to the frame, the neutral light worked but the bike would struggle to start as the voltage dropped too low. Removing the new earth once again broke the neutral light but the bike started perfectly.

I left it for ages and went for another look this afternoon. All I did was connect the new earth connection direction to a better place ( I am stupid and I previously earthed to a bolt connected to plastic that goes to the frame).

So long story short, with a new good earth in place the neutral light is working and the display indicates the gear I am in at all times (clutch in or out). I am happy to finally put this issue to bed.
