Since you are removing the oil filter you should not be too worried about destroying the old one. If you have already tried the socket and it doesn't work, then you should try a strap wrench. These come in different models. Some have a metal strap, some have nylon. Also there are the giant channel-locks. But if you don't want to go buy either one, just grab your favorite old screwdriver and pound it through the filter sideways. Use the screwdriver as a handle to twist the filter. That should give you enough leverage to turn the filter off.
In my opinion, if the filter is still round, you should try the strap wrench before you damage the filter with a screwdriver or channel-locks. If it is truly as tight as you say, punching a hole in it is a last resort and if that doesn't work, there's a hole in the filter that's leaking oil all over, making it even more slippery than you really want it to be.
I always recommend that you take more than my opinion. There are a lot of people out there who know a lot more than I do. Maybe they will give you a little more information.
