Last time out on 2006 R1200GS the gear indicator started acting up. Whenever I pulled the clutch in the indicator went out and the indicator would would not come back on until the clutch was released. In addition, the indicator would no longer show neutral. As a result I had to pull in the clutch to start the motorcycle (other wise the bike thought it was in gear even when in neutral). Has anyone else seen this problem? Dealer said it is likley the gear position sensor. Has anyone changed one? Appreciate any info you can provide.

I had a 2002 R1150RT with a gear indicator that read funky after riding through standing water at speed on the highway during a torrential downpour. My dealer changed out the sensor while I waited in the showroom and the entire process took about 15 minutes if I recall.

Gear indicator problem

A recently bought a '06 1200GS with 35000km. After a while the gear indicator started to fail. Sometimes it just disappeared. Sometimes it showed the wrong gear. Of course, while in error not indicating neutral, the engine would shut off when I put out the jiffy stand. Replacement of the sensor fixed it completely. 30min of work.

Thanks,
I had checked on parts diagram and hadn't found it! Could be a loose connection, if not guess I will have to change it.

By the way, I plan leaving this week from eastern Canada to go out west via Blue Rigde Parkway/route 66 to San Diego, but the weathier in the mid west seems pretty insecure with torodados popping up everywhere, think I should postpone the trip or take a safer route? I am avoiding crossing Canada because of snow still at this time of year...

Being new to the GS I wanted to check something simple. It is normal that the gear indicator only shows up when the clutch is released?

The neutral light does not come on either, I have used a diagnostic tool MotoScan and the neutral light works when testing from that. I have a new gear selector switch that I will replace and see if that fixes the issues.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, I went ahead and took off the clutch switch. The thing was full of grit and dirt and fell apart. I checked by bridging the wires and looking at live data on MotoScan and it changes from Operated to Not Operated. I have ordered a new switch but I don't know if that will fix the gear indicator showing all the time.

No gear indicator is not a big problem but I do feel that I might have rebuilt the bike by the time I get this one fixed :)

The Gear Selector switch wiring was a mess. I have replaced the plugs and connected a new Selector Switch, I will fit it next to test it.

I know this is an old post but, did you ever fix this issue? it is exactly what I have on the same bike/year.

Merged these threads as symptoms look the same. Guy you replied to hasn’t been here since 2011 but replies above seem to indicate the gear selector sensor.

OK, so I fitted the new part and still have the same problem. I tested wires and all from the sensor read 5v. That to me reads there is a break in the negative.

Wires to sensor before and after plug

1 + GNBLGE Green/Blue/Yellow - Black 0.35

2 S VISW Violet/Black - Red 0.35

3 - VISWGE Violet/Black/Yellow - Brown 0.5

UPDATE: I put a temp earth to the sensor and now the sensor wire changes voltages for each gear. I assume now the ECU does not understand which gear relates to which voltage.

Side Note: Still no display of gear unless the engine is running and the clutch is out.

I had earth problem when I owned Suzuki DL1000 2014. The bike was just 3 years old and I started to have a lot of electrical issues. Good Suzuki forum that I was following suggested to unscrew every screw that connected ground wire to the frame, clean the screws, clean the point of the wire, clean the frame where it attaches and put a lot of grease or dielectric grease on assembly. Also, they suggested replacing any ground wire that was looking rusted under the insulation and if replaced, to use thicker copper wire.
I did all of that but felt no need to replace any wire.
After that, all the electrical problems disappeared from the bike never to return back.
