They do it to save money. Old BMW airheads used Fiam twin horns which were nice and loud. On my 2011 I put on a compact Stiebel air horn I got from Griot's Garage. Trust me, it is LOUD!

Nautilus is the way to go

I have an 05 model, and the horn was ok.
I replaced it with a Stebel Nautilus.
Loud alright.
I had a women in a cage start to drift across into my lane yesterday, she was not even aware that i was there. I hit the horn and laughed as she jumped in shock, and spilled the coffee she was drinking in her lap.

Easy to fit, and plenty loud at 139db or so.

Have a Stebel on my K1600 as well. Would like to see your install on the GSW when you get it done.
I will post pictures when I get it done. Today I get a PDM60 so I can bypass the CANBUS. After that everything else will start to fall in line. Monday I get the extra brackets so I can mount the horn portion, I am still looking for a good spot for the compressor.
No Go with a Stebel or a Screaming Banshee. I am looking at a Fiamm.

Horn GSW

Just installed the Hornig Stebel Horn kit on my wethead. They supply the "custom" wiring setup that plugs into the factory horn plug. Pretty easy to install and if you go out to the Hornig website, they have a video of the install. Loud MF that is for sure:eek:

Brett can you provide a link to Hornigs video and also do you have a picture of your horn installed.
Thanks

I'd be interested in seeing any pics of how you guys end up installing your horns.

I am going to try to add a second horn similar in design (but louder) to the OEM horn circuit and see if it will run without the canbus shutting it down, and if it is loud enough to suit me. Will let you guys know how that goes.

The after market horns are being installed between the forks. The Horing kit seem to have the best idea so far. I may add a Screaming Banshee solid state relay and controller in place of the relay on both bikes.
Screaming Banshee has just released a new third generation relay and controller that allows you to keep the stock horn as well as add a higher powered horn such as the Stebel that I am installing.

Spence:

Where did you "trigger" the PDM60 on your GSW? My is off the 7.5 amp fuse connection (dealer chose this location), but that has a 1 minute delay when turning off the key which keeps the farkles running during that time. I would like my PDM60 to shut off immediately with the key, so I'm hunting for a new trigger point. By the way...I have the LED headlight set-up.

Thanks!

I triggered the PDM60 off of the tail light. Since I run a pair of P3 tail lights under the license plate that was an easy place. It is kind of a pain to get to the first time but it is out of the way as is the P3 controller.

Interesting! Skene Design (in their P3/IQ-160-TS installation instructions) say that tapping into the tail light wire on the GSW for a PDM-60 trigger will throw a CANBUS fault. So you haven't found that to be the case huh?

Now if BMW would only fix the LED turn signal software, my little yellow warning light friend will become a thing of the past!!

Ride safe and thanks as always for your helpful posts.

As long as the only thing that your are doing with the tail light wire is tripping the solid state relay in the PDM60 then you should have no problems. If you pull any power that is a different story. Even 1 Skene controller will pop a Code, I know I tried.

Using the tail light wire (grey/red wire) to trigger the PDM60 worked perfectly. As you know, it involves taking off the seats. seat rail and dropping the tail light assembly to get to the above mentioned wire. From loosening the first screw to last one tightened, the job took about 45 minutes. Very straight forward. The P3s power off one of the PDM60 circuits. There are no issues with fault codes and the PDM60 powers down when the tail light goes out...about 5-7 seconds after you turn off the key.

Thanks again for the advice on this.

Ride safely!
