Yesterday I saw a GS on 495 Mansfield MA which had great highly visable break light and turn signals. I never got a really good view but wereinstalled in a black box, maybe 12"W by 2"H, perhaps on top of luggage rack? I also think turn extra signals lights were on panniers. What have you done to improve visibility in this area? Perhaps my biggest worry is rear-ended in a sudden freeway stop.

Check out the Skene P3 lights. They have a brake light that is easy to add on to your tag bracket and they also have a version that includes a turn signal function. I have then on mine and the only problem I have is on group rides, it annoys the guy behind me because it's so bright.

They were very easy to add on a circuit off my PDM60 power distribution module.

This bike, IMO, is poorly conspicuous from the rear. I had a few riders that followed me on my first rides out on my '16 GS that told me that. It was one of the first things I did in adding electrical components after installing the PDM60. You can't miss it now :grin2:

I have a pair of the simple hyper light modules mounted on a bracket I made up myself.
Run it though my Hex eZycan. Adds to the functionality, my favourite of which is activating the brake light under heavy deceleration regardless of the brakes actually being used, so when using engine braking. Good way to convey to inattentive people following that I am a actually slowing down.

I have the Skene P3 Tail Lights as well...love the brightness, conspicuity flicker and the modulation to really grab an approaching vehicle's attention. I also put the Weiser Technik https://www.weisertechnik.com LED Turn Signals on the rear (since I had the Skenes already) and the Weiser 2-in-1 LEDs for Front...Makes a white driving/running light, plus amber flash for turns and hazards. Weiser also makes a 2-in-1 rear that flash amber and have LED Red for extra brake lights. I would have gotten those had I not had the Skenes already. I use a PDM60 for additional power and circuits to prevent CANBUS issues. Clearwater also has a modulating tail light as third alternative. Here's some photos of the results. My tail shot shows mid-install with the standard US incandescent bulb on left and LED on right.

Ditto on the Skenes and LED signal bulbs. My wife and I both have Skenes front and rear and Dynamic Motorrad turn signal bulbs (likely same as Weiser). It's not exactly a cheap mod but is a major safety enhancement. We receive positive feedback on every one of our club rides. I think the OP may have seen the AdMore mini LED light bar.

Skene P3's + One

Ditto on the OP's on Skene. I've had P3's for years and wouldn't be without them. Last month I put on another light below the plate to take advantage of the HexEZcan brake light channel. Like the P3's, it comes on as a tail light and then flashes when braking.

I also have the Skene Photon Blasters on the lower front forks with turn signal option as aux lights can wash out the visibility of the OEM signals. Again, very visible.

Just has these installed on the GS for the trip to Ak. next week. I really like the set up. Mine were installed vertical along both sides of the plate.

I use a Whelen TIR3 mounted in place of the reflector just below the tail light, plenty bight.
Those look interesting and the price point is attractive.

Did you consider the LIN version? There is a disclaimer that they are not to be used as brake lights??? Does the same apply to the TIR? It seems the advantage of the LIN is better lateral viz, but are they an older model? You can find all sorts of contradictory info on the LIN vs the TIR re brightness and generation.

Do they play well with the canbus system?

It looks like either the LIN or the TIR could be mounted between the luggage rack and the OEM tail light...did you consider alt locations, though where you have it prob works well?

With anything up to 25 patterns, is there one that flashes for a couple of seconds then goes solid?

Sorry for the deluge of questions, but the Whelen website leaves much to be desired, not even pdfs for install.

TIA

I did not consider the LIN3 or another mounting location since the reflector is almost the exact same size as the light it was a no-brainer.
Regardless of what is said or not said about using these as brake lights or the differences between the LIN and TIRI can say that TIR3 mounted where I have it works very well, if I have a car following too closely and I apply the brakes just enough to illuminate the brake lights they back right off virtually without exception.

The Whelen by itself will not play well with the CanBus, I use a Skene IQ-160 controller from 2014, now they have an updated IQ-260 that is the same and optionally you can get one that has a decelerometer which I just found and will order.
I have the IQ-160 set to flash the lamp quickly 3 times and go solid now.
Mounting and wiring it up is a cinch and 10-15 minute job using Posi-taps.
I also use the conspicuity flicker in running light mode.

Interesting setup
Do you use the controller that controls turn signals as running lights? Do you personally think that is desirable? On a 2004 r1150r I had a device called BRAKE! that allowed for the flashing pattern you have and allowed the turn signals to serve as running lights---it seemed a natural at the time.
Did you have to remove the rear rack to get to the wires or could you access more easily elsewhere?
tia

I do not do anything with the turn signals the TIR3 is plenty, and you do not have to remove the rear rack to access anything when installing this setup just remove two screws to drop the plastic rear fender/plate holder

Update: Since writing this I have installed the BMW LED turn signals, they appear brighter than the stock incandescent bulbs type.

Ditto on the rear visibility of the lights. Followed a friend on his GSA and hardly noticed his directionals. I chose the Admore Lighting product. Nice install below the license plate, hi-vis LEDS. Blinks right and left in concert with oem lights, brake light has a rapid flash and also incorporates an accelerometer sensor to detect rapid deceleration (from throttle release or downshifting). Very happy with it.
