Hi everyone, I'm a new poster. I just recently bought a used 2006 R1200GS from a BMW dealership, and while riding across the Brooklyn Bridge, the left fairing ripped off and hit me in the leg. Shocked, I turned on my hazards and pulled the part off (It held on with one of the attaching points), and put it in my saddle bag.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? This is actually the second BMW I've owned (I had a R1200C many years ago), and was really shocked that the entire fairing could rip off so easily. I'm thinking I'm going to go back to the dealership to see what's up, but wanted to see if anyone else has heard of/experienced something similar.

Beyond this, can anyone recommend a shop where I can get a replacement left fairing? The top corner tab broke off completely, and bent the metal bracket it was attached to.

Yes, it is a known issue on '04 ~ '07 bikes (I think it's up to '07), usually blamed on not properly fastening the quick disconnect on the bottom front of the panel. Some who have experienced the problem are sure that it was properly fastened.

To fasten the panel hold the ridge on the male part parallel to the ground and push the bottom of the panel until you hear and feel a click. If you don't hear/feel the click it's not all the way on for some reason.

Some folks have replaced the quick disconnect with a screw of some type. Perhaps someone else will comment on how that was done.

some people in Germany lost their fairings too. And as Marc mentioned it concerns only the first model. I´ve never heard that this happend on later models (> 08).

I´ve some pics to make it easy to control yourself the fairings. It´s the right side for the example.

You look from top to bottom right - driver´s position

the screw TX25 must be fixed this way. Checking with the hand the tip must be tight

the gaps must be equal

it´s important that the fairings are fixed perfectly on the noses of the tank cover

the closures must be fix too

speed nut for the closure

loose closures

the pins of the fairings must be in the rubber bearings

I think the pics will make it easy to check the fairings for a safe attachment.

BMW stopped supplying the QD fastener on the inside. The used a simple clip nut and bolt on later models. Retrofit should cost a buck or two.

Great posts....Chosen you might take it to a body shop. Maybe they can heat it and bend it back. Welcome to the forum.

Sorry for the late reply, and thank you fall for the input. I ended up bending it back and re-attaching the piece that broke off by screwing a metal plate into both pieces. It's not the prettiest thing, but does the job.
