Edited 2/7/25 to have correct cost of MotoScan software of $43.99 not $124 as originally thought.

Having been a GS911 used since 2018 and filling up seveal of them I wanted a cost effective alternative for when servicing bikes that may not end up sticking around long term, so I finally bought the components to use the Moto Scan app;

What I bought:

Blu V Track phone, Walmart - $29.99 (I needed and android devise)
UniCarScan USCI-2100 ODB2 Bluetooth scanner, Amazon - $73.00
AMHTDOL ODB2 Adapter Cable for BMW 10 pin to 16 pin (to be used on Hex/Camheads if watercooledcable not needed), Amazon - $12.59
MotoScan Ultimate software, MotoScan - $43.99

After dicking around downloading the Moto Scan app and gettign the USCI-2100 conntected to blue tooth the software connected(I'm not good with android or electronics in general so its awyas a struggle) I played around with it for a minute or two. What I am seeing is w/o spending another $43.99 for the professional version of MotoScan software it's functions are extreamly limited, as in I can turn off service reminder lights and reset the service reminders and not much else. I can see if there if codes are present and how many but cannnot see what code actually is. I doub't that I can reset codes but would not reset them w/o knowing what they were so it moot.

For the $123.94 $116.93 x 6% sales tax = $123.94) I'm not sure I'm all warm and fuzzy what i paid verses what I got and the extreamly limited functions with the "trial" version of the software. If I add in and addditional $124 $43.99 to get the pro version to have access to more stuff, I'm getting a lot closer to the price of GS911 or over the cost of a used GS911 with VIN spots avaliable. The benefit of the Moto Scan is the unlimited amount of bikes it can be used on verses the GS911 allow only 10 VINS (without going to the $100 a year unlimited) but honestly how many people are really going to use all 10 VIN spots.

I also realize that if I had an android devise the overall cost would have been under $100 but I had worse case senario. I also opted for the USCI over the more often used ODBLink MX. The USCI is about $15 cheaper and firmware is automatically updated whn you connect to BT/WIFI.

Hope my 1st impression is not a lasting impression. Update: after paying for the "ulitimate" version of MS functionallity is greatly increased.

I have the Motoscan Ultimate version, which I have found to be excellent...once you get to know your way around the App, its very easy. Just watch "The Old Mechanic" on YouTube and hes full of praise and useful tips and he has a sound Knowledge of the device.

While I'm sure the ultimate version does more the trial/free version does and how could it not as the trial/free version does very little and costs $125 - $150 depening on the components you buy, then add in the license fee of $125 USD for the ultimate/paid version and you are only $25 to $50 away from buying a GS911.

Moto Scan is promoted as a budget minded alternative but the reality is unless you only intend on doing on restting the service reminder light and restting the maintnenace mileage, its not really not that great of a deal.

I have the Motoscan APP and same OBD-II adapter and and found it to be all I need and has worked well. There are 4 versions of the APP, Lite (free) , Basic ($13.99), Professional,($26.99) and Ultimate ($43.00) but nothing that cost $124.

I was looking at a Moto-Scan (hand held scanner site) that a license was $100 EUR/$124 USD, Not sure how one could confused Moto-Scan with MotoScan

At $43.99 its certainly more palatable. I just purchased the Ultimate and will see how it goes.

Yes, sort of. Wonder what percentage of motorcyclists ever use the 10 VIN spots on the GS911? I'd bet its very low.

it's a bit of a "Win Win" with the Motoscan...if your a DIY enthusiastic mechanic, it's cheaper, or if you use a diagnostic/coding tool on many bikes it's cost effective way of avoiding an additional cost if you fill up the Vin spaces.
Have a good time with the Ultimate version, I'm sure it will win you over

I tried to use motoscan to reset the throttle body stepper motors on my 2009. It instead brought the idle speed to around 3000. Motoscan customer service suggested that I needed to update the bike’s software. It has been a few years since then and I haven’t tried again. I’d be curious to hear if this has worked for anyone here, especially with a hexhead engine.

Fooling with he MS yesterday I reset the steppers on the 2011 along with some other things to verify my patch cable was working. Reset when fine but i have not ran the bike to see if it screwed up anything. I'll start'er up this evening and report back.

I am now up to 6 bikes used on my GS-911. Pretty sure that will be enough for me. I have found the ease of use, good user interface, and frequently updated/added functionality, have made it a great purchase. Was curious if the Motoscan allows changing the startup screen, adding the sport screen, and modifying heated grips and turn signal function?

I don't think the MS can do that but can confirm next time the 2024GSA is on the lift.

I think one of my biggest complaint with the MS is all the stuff you have to complie whereas the GS911 is more an all in one thing.

I mean i was unsure what OBD scanner to buy as ther are several to choose from that do work and about 1000 that don't work. I was not sure if cable i bought if it was compatable as again there are one's that do work and other that don't work Then after I got the scanner and cable had to purchase a service then connect things via BT....Its just really piecemeal

I'm guessing that the reasons that no one has ever assembles a MS "package" to make it simple for luddites like me is 1st the varying components and do I or don't need an android devise or patch cable and level of service then once you put a price tag of all of what is needed a bit of sticker shock presents itself as MS is touted as a very afordable thing.

IDK for me the MS was just a bit frustrating

2011 Started and ran fine after the stepper reset via MotoScan.

I know you decided to go this route, seems to be working out for you, but as an FYI GS911 now has a month to month plan that you can have unlimited bikes. They "opened" it up which I think is great.

I have both GS911 and MS units. I've not chosen one over the other just added a bit of versatility to my arsenal. FWIW I like the GS911 better but the MS does what I am looking to have done 99.9% of the time. I'm also not a fan of subscriptions so the monthly/yearly thing from Hexcode is something i'd likley not do. Instead if I need another GS911 I'll look for agently used one on the secondary market with 8 or 9 VIN spots left and buy it at a discount.

I found the creator of the motoscan app very helpful. Wondering when you address missing capabilities (that are available with the GS911) if he is willing to add them in future release. You can always ask, right

I'd imagine the MS folks know the capabilities and differences of the MS vs GS911 and are probably limited in what they can and cannot do with their platform. Basically I think they are providing all the services and/or functions they can with their platform.

If you work on your own bikes and run/reset codes or service dates for friends, you can blow through 10 spots pretty quickly. With each spot used, your resale value goes down, and you eventually end up with a brick that has no value to a buyer.

I did not buy the GS911 for its resale value. I bought it as an investment to save time and money verses taking the bike to the dealership to have them read codes, reset serrice reminders, add or ommit things, etc. It has paid for itself before I ever added a second bike so its all been icing on the cake since the initial purchase.
