Just purchased a 2020 GS 1250. The Exclusive model. I’m from south central PA. About 10 miles off the MABDR. Have owned a KLR 650 and still have a Tenere 700. Looking forward to the GS knowledge from forum members. I do 30-40 days of moto camping a year, incorporating pavement, gravel, and dirt.

Welcome. I ride and camp pretty often in your neck of the woods as well. Michaux, Bald Eagle mainly but also get up to Marienville in the Allegheny. For ADV rides I also went from a KLR650 to the GS. Something that helped me greatly was attending the BMW off-road performance school in Greer SC. It's really worth the time and money in learning to ride these big bikes off the pavement.

^^^ stupid question...do you learn on your bike or do they provide "crashable" bikes...in other words, not yours
They definitely provide you with a bike of your choice and prefer you ride their bike. You can ride your own but the instructors told me that you're less likely to be tense on some of the more challenging drills if you're not dropping your bike :)

I would love to do one of those courses. I’m sure it would be very beneficial. I grew up riding 3 wheelers and have only been doing the ADV bike thing for about 4 years. I am an intermediate rider at best. I still have a Tenere 700 that I ride and Harley touring bike. Lots of good riding and camping in PA. I have also done the MABDR, NEBDR, BDRX, most of the SEBDR, and Smokey Mountain 500/1000.

I grew up on dirt and enduro riding before going all in on the street. I felt like those early skills developed in the dirt were only partially applicable to riding a big bike like a GS off the pavement. They do an excellent job in the BMW school at getting the rider really focused on balance and being attuned to the momentum of the weight you're managing in difficult places. By the end of the two days of coaching I was comfortable doing things I probably wouldn't do before the school.
