Hi;
I just changed the oil/filter on my 2022 1250GS. The manual states 4L oil capacity. I put in about 3.75 L and it showed as being over filled. I removed the oil filter and drained the oil from it and put it back on, now the oil lever is at the top end of the range. I followed the instructions and had it on the center stand on a level surface. I let it drain for about an hour. I did notice it was still dripping when I put the drain plug back on. Is there an issue where a lot of oil remains in the engine, and it requires some extra effort to drain additional the remainder?
Thanks.

You can waste a great deal of time chasing the oil level around the sight glass. You put in 3.75 liters and drained out .1-.2 of a liter. I hazard a guess that if you go on a long ride and then check the oil level you will be a bit low.

My manual (1200 not a 1250) states that it takes 4l with a filter change so that’s what I put in. I never even check the sight glass.

Draining for an hour should certainly be long enough :). I unscrew the fill cap to help get the old oil out faster and I also rock the bike between front and rear tire on the center stand once or twice to get any extra little bit of oil out, but that’s just me being anal. Even if you rushed the oil change and there was a shot glass or two of old oil still in the engine it would not cause it to be overfilled. That’s well within tolerance.

The total oil capacity of the engine is nearly 5 liters. As with most engines there is a great deal of oil left in the engine after draining it for an oil change. On the boxer engines much of the retained oil is in the valve covers. I put in 4 quarts plus a little in the oil filter to make-up the difference between 4 liters and 4 quarts.

After the oil is drained and with the filter off I tilt the bike while it's still on the center stand. First to one side than to the other to get the oil out of the heads. I then put in 4L and it brings it just to the top of the red circle. Do it at your own risk. :)

I always fill the filter to the bottom of the threads before installing it, that keeps the engine from ever suffering any oil starvation while the filter fills at start up. I end up putting in about 3 3/4 qts. to fill to the top of the red circle.

That only works on older 1200s. The newer water cooled bikes have a filter that goes on horizontally. There is enough oil coating everything critical in the engine to prevent any damage on initial startup after an oil change. On vehicles that have vertical filters, I always prefilled the oil filter, just because I could.

You ran the engine? That makes the level go down a lot the first time.

I just aim for the site glass to be Âľ full. If it's a little over or under that, no problem. My 1250 doesn't use oil. Anything above half is OK. Even if it settles down to a lower level, it'll be in the acceptable range. I filled it to half once and went out on a cool evening. The warning light goes on if it's under half. Happened once...the message said it was OK to ride, so I rode home with it like that, put in a couple OZ and all was well. This isn't rocket science and it's not required to fill it to the precise top of the circle. That's just vanity. I avoid over-filling but a little above half is fine.

rising the topic from the grave.
after changing oil + filter., I put 3.5L of oil and this is what side glass loke like after the whole night.
when I run the engine until riding temperature and than turn off, after five minutes side glass is right half of red circle. after a whole night resting on center stand, this is what I see in the morning when I check one more time.
so any comments, do/don'ts?

Id say you got the oil level perfect!

I've owned four boxers and I have found that as long as you have oil in the sight glass red circle, you're good. These engines hide oil. You will painstakingly get the lever JUST to the top of the circle, then go ride, check it again and the sight glass will be completely full.

My rule of thumb is as long as there is oil in the red circle, you're good. Go ride. Don't worry.
