Hi All.

I'm new to performing maintenance on my GS (helps save money) and I need a bit of guidance.

I'm currently paying $15 for an oil filter which I feel is a bit expensive from the dealership. Is there a cheaper source for similar item?

This is what I bought for my '05 GS. It eliminates the need for a special oil filter tool as it needs a 17mm socket.
Of course, if, like me, you need the special tool to remove the old filter, then check out beemerboneyard.com for an inexpensive oil filter tool, as per prince_ruben's post.
Or you can get the very pretty machined aluminum ones for around $60.

Oil Filters

Go to calsci.com and click on the oil filter info on the left margin it has a red asterisk on it! this chap has done a lot of research on M/C oil filters, there is also a link for info on Oil as well!! I use Mobil one and purolator pure one filters in a couple of my bikes as well as the amsoil filters, (I have used Amsoil Synthetic), in all my vehicles: cars, boats, Motorcycles and airplanes that I have owned and operated since the early 70S FWIW with excellent results!!! I use the K&N filter on my '08 K1200GT as it has a Nut formed on the end which makes the filter easy to get off in the tight space it is located in!!! they are also top quality filters air and Oil!!

If I'm buying a Mahle oil filter is it the OC619 or OC306?

If you ride a new liquid cooled GS the correct filter is the Mahle OC 619 if you have a previous air/oil cooled GS than use the OC 306.

You may also want to look at the HifloFiltro HF160RC it is made in Thailand but excellent quality.

The 2007 is a Hexhead (air/oil cooled) engine therefor the OC 306 is the best fit.

I wish I was paying $15.00; at my local BMW dealer the filter and crush washer is $30.00 (I am not kidding) so I will be looking for alternative filters.

Don't see how I missed that; correction than The OC 619 is the one for your 2017.

There was a day when K&N Motorsport Oil Filters were very high quality, that day has come and gone, a few years back K&N changed manufacturers from HifloFiltro to a generic company in China for their Motorsport filter lineup and the quality is reported to be marginal.
I have not used a Chinese K&N or cut one open yet but I plan on it.
And let's face it the only issue you may ever notice with a filter is if it completely fails and that may even go unnoticed unless you cut it open for inspection.

Which oil filter for 2012 R1200GS?

Any and all brands that cross reference would be nice. For instance, I need a filter and all I can find is a walmart, what filter do they carry that would be correct for my bike, worst case scenario?

What auto parts store would carry a correct filter in any brand name?
