I bought my 2023 1250 GSA about 7 weeks ago it didn't come with spare plastic key due to chip shortage according to sales department. Still haven't received the key called the dealer few days ago he said they are getting some keys but mine is still not here yet. Is this very normal or is it a dealership BS.

This is dealership bs
I bought my 2023 gsa and was very persistent and they finally gave me a spare key
I don't understand how we can spend $30,000 on a new motorcycle and it's difficult to get a spare key

On the bike I traded in I gave them two keys

Make them give you a spare key or offer to return the motorcycle

I'm not sure you could return the bike over a spare key 7 weeks later?

Yes the chip shortage is a thing. When I ordered my "service key" back in April the parts guy told me then they had issues getting chipped keys. Unchipped service key arrived in a couple days.

FWIW I would see if the dealer can get you a metal key that has a chip in it verses the POS plastic key that will break if you try to lock/unlock anything with it. I think the plastic key is really made out of eggs shells.

My local dealer's parts guy said that you can't get a metal with an appropriate chip in it (BMW doesn't make one--at least that's what he said). Of course, the parts guy at my local dealer could be misinformed.

Then get a metal key along with the plastic key. Then dissect the plastic key and transplant the chip into the metal key.

No matter what get a metal service key as the blade even on the key fob is weak at best.

I did get the spare metal key in few days cause I was concerned about forgetting the key in side boxes and take off also fob seems delicate and handful when removing or installing the side cases.

I ordered the second factory key and it's worth it if only for peace of mind. The plastic key literally dissolved to power after about 6 months in the wallet.
You didn't happen to dig out the transponder to see what it looked like or what marking it had on it, did ya??

Not yet, the NFC chip in the round section still has a fair bit of the gray material around it and still works. Don't want to go digging in case I break something I might need later. Does remind me to look into getting another one that I can stash in a better protective case someplace on the bike in case the keyfob gets buggered or lost. I do have the spare fob in the safe at the house, but with my luck I'll be someplace hours from home with no cell service, no asphalt, and swarms of bugs. At least I know the wife has no issues taking the jeep in to places even a jeep has no place being.

I used to keep my spare keys in the safe at the house then in the middle of Labrador 1500 miles from home in the middle of nowhere I wondered what good do my spare keys do me at home. As soon as I got home I affixed the spare key to the bike. My plastic spare key is in one of those aluminum sealed tubes wrapped in a paper towel and a $20 also stuffed in there for those rare occasion where I stop for fuel and they only accept cash and my wallet is empty.

FWIW the key fob ever if the battery is dead will also act the same as the plastic key. Hold it up to the g-spot under the rear fender and hit the starter. The plastic key only comes into play if you lose the fob.

Wish BMW has system like my Harley where you can enter your PIN using turn signal controls to bypass the key fob incase it's lost or went kaput.

My thought was to get a second plastic key and a metal key. I was just going to put the keys on a key ring and call it a day. Although, I've been dragging my feet.

Good until the loop on the plastic breaks at about day two.

Get extra steel key for regular operation. You bury the fob in your riding gear or wear around your neck, not that difficult. Just have the fob in a place where it can be checked on.

I had a Ducrapi Multistresser and if you lost the key you could tap in a code to get it to run. Couldn’t open the fuel cap though so had to have full tank before loosing your key 🙄. Oh! And after a few months it it stopped working … like the rest of the bike.
