Mine had a major cardiac events in 3 years time. Replaced both.....tried to haggle warranty with BMW but was a no go.
If you are a DIY person invest in a GS911 or the cheaper motoscan setup ( I have the motoscan) and a wake up tool which is super cheap and you are good to gofor a lot of things

Just as a note, if you added the number on the sensor via either motoscan or GS911 and dont have a wake up tool take it for a ride, mine then registered. think you need to go over 100km/h.

Is this true if you replace both at the same time?

I don't know, I only did the rear. But I think if you add both the new numbers in on the Motoscan/GS911 cant see why it wont work.
