What do you think?

The more I think about it, this is mainly a bike for someone with the disposable income, big garage, and a desire for something pretty to look at and to show off to his friends. A few may use it as a solid (and cool looking) round the world tourer with less things that can go wrong compared to an LC, but it would require modifying it back to the long distance bike that any regular old GS is, out of the box.

I don't see this bike as a great off road adventurer rather a nod to newer riders who want a cool looking bike at a sort of accessible price. This thing is cool and the young and hip will look very stylish tooling around town or on a Sunday ride. People that want an adventure bike for off road will likely look elsewhere.

Interesting development by BMW Motorrad.

Airboxer forever
An engine with loyal fans: the boxer. With the R 12 G/S, we have incorporated it into a contemporary framework concept. The basic structure consisting of the engine, single-piece tubular spaceframe with a bolted rear frame, flush suspension strut and redesigned engine peripheral equipment provides the basis for an enjoyable ride. With the three riding modes, RAIN, ROAD, and ENDURO, you can adapt your riding experience to suit your preferences. The typical boxer sound and 109 hp will transport you straight to adventure, with no diversions.

I’m curious what the brain trust here thinks.
Who is it for?
Is the price too high at $17,500?
Seems BMW is trying to please to many people. I think its not very practicle and the lore of lighter dirt orientated is just thinning the market. Think of KTM they have the 1290's to the 690's but most are mostly offroad orientated with the odd duke thrown in.

Think they should focus on the main line of bikes those of us that do Ewan's type of riding will then focus on that the rest either you go light offroad and know your and bikes limits or you look at another brand that ticks the boxes. TBH I love my 1200 GSA. I am as poor as church mouse so will never afford a 1300 GSA. But I think I have one more bike purchase ahead and it may not be BMW. Trying to please to many ends up pleasing no one.

I still have my good old R 1200 GS 2007. I recently tried the R 12 G/S and was immediately convinced.
Ihad few discussions with two dealer and traded my R 1250 GS Adventure and order this R 12 G/S which is another way to experience travel. I still love the old good 2007 but will definitely go more and more on a more "agressive" G/S model.
I should receive it by end of July. Will keep you posted.

Most of these bikes are ridden on the street and never see a dirt road. So why have crash bars? Do your other road bikes have crash bars? I have the MachineArtMoto head protectors which is enough for any fire road I may ride. Bike looks better absent crash bars as well.
