I have 04 r1200gs that came out of Panama, did not come with OEM heated grips. Im wondering if others have added heat by updating the right hand controls, heated grips and weather a non heated grip bike will have wiring provisions for them? I found one factory capped plug under the tank that I beleve is the “optional accessory socket” per the Haynes wiring diagram. Wondering if this could be used? I realize this is Can Bus so the system will limit the amps this socket will produce ( programmed value). Here are some photos of what I think is the socket. Thanks for any insight on this.

Adding the OEM heated grip will be a costly project... but, totally possible.

Our BMW are bus controlled, that means all the accessories are connected to the ZFE (central electronics) and the switches dont send power to the devices directly, they merely ask the ZFE to operate the accessory. No fuses either, the power being monitored/controlled by the ZFE.

Even is the wiring is present, you'll need to obtain:
  • A new handlebar controller with the heated grip switches
  • OEM heated grips (they are sold as a unit, element being molded in the rubber grip)
  • Some programming to 'tell' the ZFE that the heated grips are present (not sure if it can be done by consumer tools like GS911 or MotoScan).

I would go with generic aftermarket heated grips, with a separate switch, powered from a ignition controlled relay directly connected to the battery.

The challenge with aftermarket grips is the OEM handle bars are aluminum and aftermarket heated grips will not work well with aluminum.

A better solution might be get heated gloves.
