Hi a simple question from a new GS Owner. I have bought a 2004 R1200GS which has not been ridden much. Only 4000K in 2 yrs by the prev owner. The battery is toast and is not recoverable. How do you get the thing out? There's no instructions in the manual with the bike. Either reply here or via email luntley@mac.com Thanks Jerry

Jerry,

Hi. My battery failed and I replaced my own. Mine is a 2005. I bought it used last winter and the battery failed within the first week of ownership (my only problem to date). I don't know if there is a difference between years, but here is how I did mine:

Remove the (front) seat (my back seat is normally off)

Using two 10 mm wrenches, remove the negative battery cable (the black cable) from the negative battery post, avoiding contact of the tools to the positive battery post (the red cable). Always remove the negative cable first.

Using the same tools, remove the positive (red) cable from the battery positive post.

Fold both battery cables to the sides so that the cables will not interfere with the battery being taken out in a straight up motion. You may find it handy to actually tie them back to keep them out of the way until the reinstall.

The battery is held in place by a thin metal strap that has a phillips headed screw retaining the front part of the strap. Using a phillips screwdriver, remove the phillips headed screw.

Push down on the rear of the strap, allowing the hooked bottom of the strap to become free of the attaching point. It is hooked to a molded lip at the bottom rear of the battery mounting tray. Use a little care as the strap is sharp-edged.

Grasp the battery firmly and lift straight up.

Install the new battery in reverse order.

Note: Even though I am under warranty, the battery would be prorated and I expected to pay over $100 as my prorated portion. I shopped for a discount factory battery and / or an aftermarketreplacement battery through the many local dealers. I was not pleased with the prices I was given. Not being one to part with money easily, I searched further. I found the IDENTICAL gel battery at my local Batteries Plus dealer. It was only about $50 including tax. It has an unconditional 1 yr guarantee. It has been trouble free since installation..providing excellent cranking power and holds a strong charge during periods of dormancy.

mine seems to be different as you have take the tank off to access the battery.
What do you see when you remove the front saddle? Doesn't it look something like this:

That metal strap toward the bottom of the image is all that is holding the battery. The tank is not even close to being in the way. In my case I have to remove the tank bag holder, the "document" holder, the metal strap, disconnect the battery (negative first as noted by 350v8s10), then pull it out. The bike is an '05 model.

WestCo Battery SVR14

I just installed a WestCo- SVR14 (sold by WestCo) yesterday, no problem with fit........
The battery is rated at Amp Hour 14, CCA 200 and I believe that's better than the factory OEM rated at CCA 160??????????? I also invested in the WestCo Accumate battery charger which comes with the quick disconnect wired directly to the battery.
I replaced my factory battery because of "LACK OF CONFIDENCE" I just didn't trust the battery, too many problems. Speaking to my dealer's service manager he thought it may have been the BMW charger and not the battery, so I replaced both of them. Nothing worst than hitting the start button and ??????????????.
