You need to check it following the manual.

Usually fully warmed up. Then on the side stand for 5 min then on center stand.

If the oil level is anywhere in the circle bike on the centerstand on level ground anytime after a five minute drain back you are fine. The oil level will not change dramatically putting the bike on the side stand then setting the egg timer for 5 minutes then putting on the center stand and looking at the sight glass after a few more minutes. There have been many instances where I put my bike after riding and I took note of the oil level. Then came back the next morning or month later and its exactly the same or just a fraction higher up the sight glass. There is not need to over complicate the oil checking process.

As for the oil warning light its was probably a glitch. You oil level is perfect as pictured. If the warning light went out and stayed out after the next ignition system Keep riding and don't worry about it.

Had warning light for oil level on my car few years back. Checked the level and it was fine. However, the light stayed on. Turned out to be faulty oil pump.
Just a thought.

 

A little late to the game here but my GS will sometimes give oil level warnings under hard acceleration when the oil level is slightly below normal, usually towards the end of the 6000 mile service interval. It probably depends on where the sensor is, mine is a hexhead.
It hasn’t done the warning since the last oil change even though I am at almost 7k now, so either I had put a little more in up front or the bike is finally broken in at 31k miles.

 

Clogged filters will impede the oil pressure (sensor).

 

I was about to say similar. Is it due for an oil change as the filter can be a restriction if it's at the end of life and starting to clog up.

 

Oil level warning has nothing to do with oil pressure. These bikes do not have an oil pressure sensor on them.

 

They do have an oil pressure switch. Earlier bikes have an oil pressure warning lamp. I believe later bikes just activate the generic check engine lamp. Should be listed in the owners manual if it has the oil pressure warning lamp. Think this change happened when they went to the WC engines.

 

So it would appear. I also cannot find a switch or sensor for the later bikes, though there is a port for it next to the oil filter. Hard to believe they would do such a thing.
