I wore earplugs for years just the cheap foams but I got tired of them being too quiet and the hassle of wearing them. I switched to Schuberth helmets and though very quiet my ears were still ringing and my music at full volume was too loud for cruising but couldn't be heard very well above 60mph. I tried some of the odd shaped ear plugs you see on Instagram in this case the Artevive brand. They are decent and pretty comfortable to wear as they come with different size fittings to customize them. These plugs are pricey! Do I recommend them unequivocally? Well no but they are a hell of a lot better than a bag of foams from Harbor Freight and they alway seem to have some sort of sale on them. Once I got into the habit of wearing them I wear them on every ride. Sound is muted both mechanical and music but not blocked. There may be better options out there but I would say these are worth a try

If you can find them, Nolan makes great helmets. Very quiet and great air flow for beating that summer head melt heat. I recently replaced my Schubreath 5 with a Nolan N100/5. The N100 series has a fantastic visor pinlock that stays put at highway speeds, and you can even raise the entire chin-bar/visor and lock it in place for urban rides. Just be advised the Nolan's do tend to run slightly small so try a fitting before you buy or buy from Cycle Gear or a place that has a great return policy if the fit is not right.
