People bitch and whine about inflation but are more than happy to pay any price.
I agree with this statement. Unfortunately Covid curtailed travel and other non-essential spending for some folks and they now pour it into toys.

I'm content with my vehicles and bikes and refuse to pay inflated prices. I'm willing to do some dirty work to do my own maintenance and repairs. Understand some may not have the skills for that, but YouTube is a great teacher...

In the US they can not refuse warranty work if owner performed there own services. there laws in place to protect consumers.
This also applies here in the UK BUT only for motor cars (automobiles). Not for motorcycles. Heard of a second hand KTM that had been serviced by a Kawasaki dealer just before purchase. The radiator developed a leak within the warranty period but KTM refused to pay for a replacement.

Dealership consoliodation has been happening for some time in major metro areas. Once this, and refusal to release service manuals, limits competition, we will REALLY see some eye-popping labor costs. Glad I never sold my airhead. :)

The ridiculous service costs and continued niggling quality control/recall/service TSBs are what have me hesitating buying a new/used R1250GS/R1200GS LC bike. I will do my own 6000/12000 mile services but always worry if the dealer will take care and go to bat for me when issues might arise. I just test rode a new 1250GSA and it was impressive but due to supply issues did not have ESA or the LED headlight. But, then I have read on this and other forums about the LED headlight failures and ginormous costs to repair if out of warranty.
Rant over……I want a new 1250GS, but do not want to pay through the nose for service or bike failures.

BTW……owned a 2007 R1200 GSA and sold it as the warranty expired due to final drive failures, EWS ring problems, fuel controller bypass required, etc.

Recently received a quote from my local dealer for the 12,000 mile service on my (new to me) 2016 R1200 GSA...was quoted $1,200 US. Is this the going rate? Have I lost touch with service pricing?

Any confirmation one way or the other would be appreciated.

My 07 GS is in the shop now and I'm standing by for a beating! I've had BMW bikes for a long time and yeah....that's how it goes:oops:

....<37k miles, they just check it and lube and put back.....
That is not correct. They don't lube the splines under any circumstances nor open the shaft. You can ask for it but you'll have to pay. What they do, they remove rear wheel and attach perforated wheel to the drive, spin it for some time and do the readings on the machine. Any fail in u-joint tolerancies will be detected that way for the decision if the driveshaft was to be replaced.
And as you say, more then 37k miles and it will be replaced without testing.
When mine was done, I was standing beside the bike in the workshop all the time. Mine didn't fail the test (2021 with only 10k miles).

So.... my ‘17 GSA was tested at 36,xxx miles just before I purchased. I’m now at 37,2xx miles. If I take it back will I get a new shaft, or a bad look and told to go alway?

If you went through the campain once already, it has been registered on the central dealer's system and you will not be able to repeat it.

I am in Southern California. A year ago, I called a close by BMW dealer and asked for a price quote for my 2017 GSA 12K mi service. The price would start from $878 because, they said, I may need to replace other parts or to have additional works done once they opened up my bike. Aftermarket guards/skid plate etc. would cost more to uninstall and reinstall. And that did not include the spline lube job.

I went to BMW motorcycle parts, BMW motorcycle, Used BMW motorcycle parts, BMW motorcycle salvage and ordered a 12K mi maintenance kit for my bike and did the job myself, including the spline lube job. I had to buy the GS-911, a specific oil filter wrench for the bike, and a spark plug deep socket. Even with those, I still came out ahead compared to the lowest dealer cost. By the way, this was my justification for spending extra to buy the GS-911 tool over buying the cheaper OBD Motorscan tool.
YEP...Of course they're always going to Upsell you into purchasing or doing more services than you might require or need!!

BUYER BEWARE!!

A feller on the V-Strom site just paid $475 in labor to have new chain and sprockets (he supplied) replaced on his DL650. Dealer hourly rate was $150 per hour + a $10 per hour surcharge because the bike was over 10 years old. $160 an hour at the Suzuki shop:oops:

Expensive is exclusively BMW it applies to all dealerships. If you are going to rely on any dealership to perform maintenance you are going to pay a lot of money.

It’s not just a “premium brand” issue, but also inflation of labor costs everywhere. I was at local non-premium car dealership yesterday which posted a $139 labor rate. Here in Vermont this would have been more like $85 to $95 a few years ago.
A Few Years ago.. Shit. Santa Barbara SERIOUSLY needs another bike shop. The worst shop in town (Ducati) is notorious for shit work and rakes it in all day every day. Ducati owners aren't rich. Not most of em. I've owned many Duc's and ain't rich yet. Probably because I buy so many Ducs. But anyway, any brand of bike service would do really really well. The guy I use is backed up 3 months or more.

I had BMW bikes since 1978 but I am no longer in the market for one. The cost of service is astronomical and try to buy one these days. Our dealers tag on a solid $2000 to each GS and larger bike if effing fees and freight, set up, bla bla bla charges. It's isane. But the bikes fly off the floor. They are all sold before they hit the dealership. Just like everywhere. People bitch and whine about inflation but are more than happy to pay any price.
My 2010 GSA is probably the newest BMW I will ever own, for exactly the reasons you state. Also, I don’t need or want all the TFT/electronic bullshit that detracts from the riding experience imho.
