So…. I bought a 2014 R1200GS a little over a month ago. Lots of power. Handles great. Comfortable ride. Blah blah blah. A couple of weeks ago theres a glowing red triangle along with the battery indication but it resolved itself. The next day I get the same indication but again, it goes away. The charging meter looks like all is well so I’m thinking it’s probably the battery. Maybe the rectifier. At worst, an alternator. No big deal. That was before I read about the LC boxer and it’s fancy shmancy integrated %#@ charging system.
Not cool.
I charged the battery. It checks good. Holds its charge. Voltage drop on engine start is good.
Removed both connectors from rectifier. Pins look good. No corrosion. The gray ac connector pins have oil on them
DC output voltage test:
- engine running, hi-beams & grip heat on = fail.
- no load test = fail.
- Rectifier bench test
- No defects.
- AC Output check:
- found short to ground on all three pins of ac output bus connector
- removed fuel tank and exposed harness. No defects.
- I checked all 3 wires where they exit the gearbox. All 3 = short to ground
😞… So it looks like the stator has failed. I would love it if someone could prove me wrong and give some trouble shooting help. Thanks for reading my post!
