Why I chose the GS over the Africa Twin

I was in the market for another adventure bike, these are my reasons.

I switched from a 2017 AT. It was a decent road bike and very good off road, but I’m much happier with my 2022 GS

I didn’t like dealing with tubed tires and it was using a bit of oil. It lacked power for aggressive road riding. I ride a lot of miles, 20,000+ a year and the valve checks were a PITA.

The GS is a far better road bike and still good off road. Maintenance intervals are a little shorter, but far easier to do. Overall I find the BMW to be higher quality, fit and finish. That’s compared to the 2017 Africa Twin, I haven’t ridden the newer models.

Africa Twin ES DCT to replace my 2012 R1200GS and…
 CarPlay and DCT were the 2 big +s (for me)
Big minus is rear comfort for a small 5' 150lb passenger who loved the GS, and calls the Honda an Evil Twin

GS & AT are both great for me as a rider,
with a slight pref for the Honda AT on asphalt,
and a huge pref for the AT on dirt/gravel

I am an ex- track racer, and moderately competent on the street, and not so comfy on dirt
DCT makes slippy uphill u turns much easier
My dirtier buddy calls the AT a cheater bike

We are all individuals !

A couple of things on the GS that had me purchase a new GSA rather than an Africa Twin. The Telelever front end and shaft drive (sure, more power etc. as well).

And my other option was a GoldWing. In fact I had a deposit on a GoldWing in '22 but Honda couldn't ship enough Wings and by June I was tired of waiting. Then, when I looked at the GSA in more detail I was shocked at how antiquated the electronics were on the GoldWing, after realizing that, there is no way I could justify purchasing a bike that was that far behind electronically.

Anyway, I'm happy with the GSA and just waiting (and waiting and waiting) for the ice to get off the roads where I live so I can go out and ride!
