3 year old thread

I have the same sound coming from my 2018 GS1200. Sounds like plastic is vibrating together when RPM's are high. Definitely coming from the front end fairing area. Would love to find a solution. Everything seems tight.
I experienced a similar plastic rattle noise coming from the front of the bike, but could not find nothing loose. Unfortunately I stored the bike out of state and cant take it to a dealer to have in check. But the noise is driving me crazy because it definitely sounds like there is something loose.

I have the same noise as the op.Its definitely pinking/pinging or pre ignition /spark knock.Worse when fully loaded and under light throttle openings.Ive tried everything to eliminate it.BMW arent interested even though ive recorded it.No fault found every time.So ill fix it myself.
Mines a 1250 and the noise has got gradually worse.Ive tried different fuel grades and makes and octane booster..no effect.
My current theory is that carbon deposits inside the combustion chamber are glowing and lighting the charge pre spark.Ive just changed the plugs and there was quite a bit of carbon on the old ones.
Im in the process of adding bmw fuel system cleaner then thrashing the nuts off it to see if it improves..

Hello to anyone that's still looking at this thread. Just got my first GS, 2012 R1200 Rallye. I’ve had it almost three weeks and this exact noise has been driving me nuts! It was only present at certain rpm’s, 3600-3900, regardless of what gear. I thought it was powertrain related but the other day I was riding a gnarly trail and dumped it on a big rutted hill climb. Since then it’s been even worse, present at all sorts of rpm’s. Today driving home I started grabbing and applying force to different items as I was driving, low and behold I can make the sound go away every time by applying force to my left side crash bars with my foot. Got home and started checking hardware to find all is “tight” but found the upper forward through bolt mount isn't holding the right side smaller auxiliary bar snug to the motor. I can whack the crash bar with my hand and it rattles briefly. I believe what we are all experiencing is resonant frequency of some specific item unique to each of our bikes. I’m thinking perhaps there’s bushings in that mount that are shot and allow just enough movement for a resonant vibration. Does anyone have input on crash bar bushings? Is that a common application? I’d hate to tear it apart to find no bushings. This may not be the case for all but I believe it is for me. When I apply pressure as stated above all I hear is the motor and tires, at any rpm. No gravelly rattle. Now I just have to figure out how to fix it…

You can just remove the crash bars and take a ride to test it. I have exactly same issue but I don't think that the noise comes from crash bars. There are no bushings at engine bars. They attached straight to engine and chassis mounts. Imagine that today I was riding at 3700 rpm with cruise control at highway with passenger and full luggage, and when an uphill came on the strange pinging started. It is most related to the load of the engine. Could be something that resonates, like cam chain, valve or any other shaft. Seems that comes from inside engine.

Hello all,

Had another look inside, and my decompression mechanism on the left side looked a lot like this :

It doesn't seem to spring back. Is that abnormal behaviour? I checked the right cylinder and played with there too, nothing "shocked" me on that side, so I believe it was probably springier. Is that correct?

Is the part easy to change? Any idea of the cost of the part?

Importantly, if that is the cause of the noise, is the noise only annoying, or is there a risk of failure and expensive repairs?

Thanks for the ideas. Sad to see a lot of other riders seem to be having similar issues. In my case no question it's not a screw loose (not on the bike anyway)

It is absolutely fine. I have replaced mine under warranty and new are exactly the same.

Thanks for the input
Well, stealership says my bike is absolutely fine. Cams are great, all is working well. I still can't understand the rattling noise. With new oil and on cooler days it is not an issue, but next summer will likely be noisy again.
I may just have to wear some better earplugs.
